The UK government is committed to mediation as a matter of first resort as never before. Partly this is because statistics show nearly a 90% settlement and satisfaction rate; partly it is to do with the fact that access to justice is ever harder to square with the running down of the legal aid system. Mediation is not only much more effective than going to court, but it is much, much cheaper. So it is a simple matter of public policy to promote it.

What does this mean to you? Well, basically mediation is set to explode!

Starting in 2013, for example, mediation case referrals from the small claims court system will number more than 80,000 – and continue to grow. Also in 2013, workplace mediation is set to become the de facto operating procedure before industrial tribunals are convened.

All cases in the Court of Appeal below £100,000 will also automatically be sent to mediation.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Other common law jurisdictions, like Australia, are already leading the way.

As a trained mediator, once you build your experience and reputation, you can earn commercial fees of between £1,500 per half day and £2,500 per full day.
